lyra are junk mp3 players (if u dont believe me, check out that link below)....sorry to break the news but that is why no one really talking about them unlike ipod. just get an ipod nano and ur problem with downloading songs is solved...they are so user friendly and seem to say 'hello' to you as you turn it on.....soooo cute :)

Music Before the 90s?

I like all types of music, but I mainly listen to hard rock and metal. The more I've listened to music, the more I've found that MUSIC BEFORE THE 90S SUCKS! No one seems to agree with me. Do any metal heads out there agree that 80s metal sounds gay? When I think of metal, I think of heavy guitar, drums, and screaming. I don't want to hear guys singing. Don't go lecturing me on how I need to listen to Metallica or Pandera. That's gay metal. Anyone agree?

I mean, I don't listen to metal.

But for one thing, the 60s/70s were absolutely seminal to rock music.

The Beatles, The Who, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, The Ramones. The list is super long.

And some of my favorite bands are from the 80s: The Cure, The Smiths, The Jesus %26amp; Mary Chain, The Dead Kennedys, Dire Straits. Etc.

So, unless the only thing you like is Anthrax or something, you would have to be kind of crazy to think that.

Don't forget today's music owes so much to those groundbreakers then.
I agree. I grew up wit AC/DC and others from the 70s. When the 80s arrived, the so-called metal band suddenly started wearing makeup (and I don't mean like kiss!) and foofing their hair all big. They looked like little girls prancing around the stage! ick. I never found any of them interesting or attractive. The 90s were not much better.

But I think it might be unfair to lay blame for social corruption on it... I think its like a festering boil on the flesh, the RESULT of sickness rather than the cause.

Our real sickness is in religion and the Media... And a lack of real leadership. I'm not talking about Bush, (though he IS a prime example of poor leadership,) I'm talking about us leading ourselves. If a person had any self esteem at all, would they want to listen to a guy talk about "macking ho's" or "keepin it real," (like that means anything to them,) to previously-used music?

Ever since 2LiveCrew "popped, popped, popped that guchi baby" and record execs SAW that it sold, and that STREET language %26amp; stolen beats would translate into $$$$ without needing musicians... gangsta rap was born.

Rap's been around for 30+ years, by the way.. and it wasn't until it went mainstream -- meaning sold/distributed by white record execs (at first)... that it became the degenerative nonsense of stereotypes, morons, hoochie mommas, and you got a whole lexicon of Street Slang. Long WAY from "getting jiggy wit it", aren't we?

Obama today on the IOWA campaign trail: "that's wut I'M talking ABOUT!!!"... (now, did he learn this phrase at his white grandparents place in Hawaii, where he grew up as Barry? in college? did Oprah tell him the deal-io?) this is a Presidential candidate trying to sound Hip by using some Hop?

It's on Disney, everywhere and ads for KIDS. It's in the headlines for Cell Phones ("Where you at?")... it's the spine of MTV of white kids wearing tattoos and acting gangsta straight from the streets of "the OC"... it's beyond laughable. So, you have white kids creating/making money on Grand Theft Auto... games. Tommy Hilfiger MADE himself multi-millions as many other designers, on street wear.. etc. (don't be a hater!)... Listen, ESPN will tell you that players just "got JACKed up!!" and "yo, lookit dat play, yo!"... so, this is far and away more persasive than you'd ever know. It's part of America now. Don't be a hater!

Especially when the most STREET acts, like "Fiddy" goes straight to the hills of New Jersey suburbia, once they "get bank" -- and cares less than 50-cents about streets he's still pretending he's from... ETC. (it ain't just him, homey).

What kind of Rap are you listening too? There are a lot of great Rap songs out there that are positive and just awesome to jam to. Try some Tupac or DMX.

why are your blaming it all rap %26amp; hip hop? its all different kinds of music, and bands, like fall out boy,%26amp; nickelback. neither of those are rap or hip hop. and no. i dont think its the music thats corrupting teens. it think its the house hold they were brought up in. im 16, and listen to this music all the time. but i dont smoke or drink, or think all african americans act poorly. im not racist or ignorant either. teens dont act the way they do because thats how all the famous people do ( i dont know why adults get that into there head.) they do it cause it makes them think there in control. i think you should also listen to more rap and hip hop besides the ones you have, because a lot of them actually do have a meaning.

Everything you said is so politically incorrect.. but I couldn't agree more. Rap music promotes violence, materialism, misogyny, and living a 'thug' life style. It's a dreadful influence on kids, and teaches them a twisted set of values.

To be honest, I believe that if you listen to a song where someone kills a cop, and that makes you want to kill a cop, there's something wrong with you, not the song.

I hate it too. Rock music is much better. I don't see how so many people prefer Rap over Rock.
I do! It must be the crappiest type of music around...if you can even call it that. I don't see how someone talking and cussing non-stop can be considered music. Damn it! They even made drug music sound terrible. Bring back Janis Joplin, Zeppelin, The Doors and Hendrix. The world needs real music.

Most of us are from English speaking countries and many of us agree that modern mainstream music of today is on a decline, but how about other countries? Is the modern music of other countires declineing too?

I for one know that the pop music of China has went down the drains.... The poppers of today just don't hold a candle to Anita Mui or Teresa Tang...

Arabic music is still very good, I think. But that's partly because many of the artists are staying true to the traditional roots.

I don't have a clue what they're saying, despite the fact that half of my family are Arabic/can speak Arabic - but the music sounds good. Apparently there are Arab Hip-Hop groups now, ha. I haven't checked any out yet, but I should, it sounds, erm... interesting.

I think African Music is terrible now. Well I can only speak for West Africa, but goodness me...

I listen to the classic songs, and compare it to the bullcrap that's being made today and just wonder why. It's like they're trying to embrace US Hip-Hop culture in some way, and incorporate it into their music - I think it sounds terrible.Obviously there are exceptions but I'm speaking generally.

I can actually understand most of what's being sung because it's usually either in Krio [broken English - like a weird mix of English other African languages] French or English - and the lyrics aren't fantastic either.

This new year, i went there and I was watching Russian music channel. the same as American pop tart, nothing new. RAP music, I means Russian rap, when forst time I heard I thought I was going to bleed LOL.

don't get me wrong, there are many Russian rock bands, musicians, talented but again like in here %26lt;USA%26gt; there mighty $$ play major role. most of the time TV show talentless crap.

I can't say I know anything about the past music of other countries, since I am from the US.

But, I watch IMF(International Music Feed) where they have this show called One World, and it plays videos from other countries. While I don't understand the languages, I can just tell that they seem pretty poppy. I have seen plenty that seem like they are the Britney of that country.

I do speak Spanish, and I have noticed that a lot of the music in Spanish speaking countries have really horribly written lyrics. But, again, I can't compare them to older Spanish music.
you need to get some reggae music, not reggaeton, reggae, dance hall, some reall jamaican music.
Check out Rammstein. Most of their songs are in German but some are translated into English.
The Only band i remember from another country was Gorky Park they were a russian rock band back from the early 90's
I can say that we've got the same situation in Russia, Ukraine and Italy!

Who the hell am I to know what happens in those three countries? Well. I was born in Russia, I had lived in Ucraine till 2003, and I used to listen to Russian/Ukrainian music. There were few bands that I liked, the rest just sucked, since everyone was trying to make commercial music, and to be what the media wanted them to be, to fiollow the standard models. Then I moved in Italy, but here the situation is the same. There are a lot of bands, like Finley, that are trying to be as "punk" as possible, but the truth is that they just make laugh...Whereas the others make and remake the same love songs. I mean, there are no good singers anymore. However there are always some exceptions, but obviously nobody have ever heard about them, they are not commercial.

That's why I mainly listen to British rock music, seems it's the only still able to give good bands...

P.S.: oh, and Germany is in the same situation, where are such great bands as Rammstein and Kraftwerk?! There's nothing left to listen to, just the same crap...

Having said that, there has been some good Native American stuff over the last few years.

I have a really good friend who lives in Italy. She says that their popular music is terrible. Mostly house music. Whenever I was in Italy, though, I heard top 40 artists from the U.S. wherever I went. Britney Spears' song Toxic was REALLY popular.
Italy's is pretty much declining the same way America's is.

But Australia's is getting better :)

I am from Greece, raised in Germany and my wife is Serbian (you know Yugoslavia which no longer exists, Clinton's and Blair's bombing of Belgrade and Novi Sad and... anyway) beside these three countries I have some access to french, italian and eastern european music, and to my depression the things are declining everywhere. Too sad, but that's the way it is. Music is business nowadays, and in order to make "bucks" u must make music that sells big. How do you do that? "Educate" your clients to listen to and like crap (you can write 10 crappy songs in ten minutes, but only once in a while a really good song) and once that's done you can start producing. Well you know the results.

Thank god there are some lone riders still out there that can make our day.
Oh yes, it's not just mainstream music from Enslish speaking countries that is declining. I can tell you about my two countries : French Rap and Egyptian Rap are all over the mainstream..So i just listen to classic songs of my countries.. modern music everywhere is declining I think

I just noticed that most mainstream music is mediocre and founded by people that are already rich there by creating a system of rank within the music industry that only lets the rich get richer is this true? I mostly support Hardcore punk because to me

Every genre of music has its big-money, corporate dark side. There are a handful of "punk" labels that are a big industry, and of course some bands calling themselves punk will strike deals with a major label. The obvious effects that has on the music is uninspired songwriting (remember when Blink 182 made that TV show about recording one of their newer albums? They spent like 8 months in the studio and most of the time they were just twiddling their thumbs, trying to pump a dry well because that's what their contract stipulated), ridiculous over-production (give a producer a million dollar salary and he'll polish that turd of an album for you), and viral ad campaigning.

It does seem that mainstream music has stopped trying. It seems almost that the 'hits' are selected by a committee and not the fans that are out there. Or maybe all music sucks and people don't understand that they don't have to buy something if they don't like it.
Mainstream was cool back in the early 90's with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, etc. But nowadays it sucks. Nickelback is by far my least favorite band right now. Every one of their songs sounds the same to me. As far as punk rock goes, the only mainstream band I like is Sum41. Long live classic punk bands like NOFX, Dropkick Murphey, Misfits, Ramones, etc.

I am amazed at how music seems to facilitate learning. In our preschool, we have just found the music of Cathy Bollinger and Rivanna Music.

She has a cd, Alphabet Jam that has a book with it. All of the letters and each has its own song. There is a vowel song and a "y" at the end sounds... song.

I haven't but am curious about it from your post. One cd/dvd that has been wonderful for my daughter is They Might Be Giants': Here Come The ABC's. She has really took to the songs about the alphabet, I love the music, and the dvd really entertains her. I definitely recommend the TMBG cd as a compliment to your alphabet cd collection!
