Music-splitting software?

I'm not sure what exactly you'd call this type of software, but I'm looking for a program (preferably free, or share-/free-ware) that can separate the vocals from the music/beats of a music file so that I could mix vocals with other music, etc. Can anyone give me a name I can find on the web or download.com?

It's not that easy. There is software that tries, but with mixed results.

During the mixing of a song, the instruments can be biased to the "left" or "right" stereo channel. The lead singer is usually balanced equally. If you compare the Left to the Right, the signal they have in common is the lead vocals, which you can then split off and save separately. This is how some "voice cancelling" kits work.

HOWEVER, any other signal that was equally balanced across Left and right will also be stripped out. So it depends on how the original track was done.

The Beatles, for instance, were known to send one voice or instrument exclusively Left (or Right), making it hard to strip out.

Vocal removers do NOT work that well. Just search for it and you'll find some examples, and their results are lacking. There's simply NO GOOD WAY to remove just a PART of a sound.
